Synopise:
John A. Miller, son of John C. Miller and Elizabeth Edwards,
was born 11
Apr 1844 at Newbern, Bartholomew Co., Indiana. He was about 11
years old when
his family moved to Lucas Co., Iowa late in 1855. He listed himself
as a
farmer when he enlisted in the Union Army on 17 Jul 1861 to serve as
a Private
in Co. B, Iowa 6th Infantry. He fought in many battles and was in
the front
lines early in the morning of 6 Apr 1862 at Shiloh, Tenn. He
witnessed the
death of his older brother Oliver, who was in the same Company. He
was
reported captured by rebels 3 Jul 1863 at OakRidge, Miss or 28 Jun
1863 at
Vicksburg, Miss., was confined at Richmond, Va 14 Jul 1863,
"paroled" at City
Point, Va 19 Jul 1863. He reported back to duty with remarks
"exchanged" and
sent back to the fields. He was honorably discharged 31 Dec 1863.
On 1 Jan
1864, he re-enlisted as a Corpral in Co. B, 6th Iowa Veteren Infantry
Volunteers. He was wounded several times, the last quite severely
at Battle of Lost Mountian, Georgia. He was in hospital for several
months,
being discharged from Keokuk, Iowa hospital 12 Dec 1864. He applied
for a
Pension and was granted #44268.) He was 20 years old by now, 5' 7
3/4" tall,
light complexion, Hazel eyes, and dark hair.
John lived at Chariton, Iowa until Sep 1867, then moved to
Indianopolis,
Ind. The 1870 US Census shows him living in a "boarding house" in
the city.
He is age 26, a bookkeeper, born Indiana. We find next that he
married 30 Dec
1880 in Danville, Vermillion, Illinois, to a widow Electa Andrews
Coder. He
reports he is 38, a mechanic, still in Indianapolis. She says she
is 27,
from Williamsport, Penn, born Chennry Co., N.Y., dau of Herman A
Andrews and
Deborah Bennett. She had two children by her previous marr, we know
of the
daughter Cora because they lived with them the rest of their lives.
The 1900 Census reports he is still living in Indianapolisat 2149
Pennsylvania Street, age 56, married 19 years, born Apr 1844. He is
employed
as a boot and shoe salesman. Living with him is wife Electa (born 4
1838, age
62, md. 19 yrs., 2 children) and a step-daughter Cora Gertrude Coder
Jordon
with her husband William A. Jordon. John never had children of his
own.
