Research notes (anonymous)
Robert Hodgen, the owner of the plantation on which Hodgenville was laid out
on the establishment of that town, in 1818, was a native of Pa. He moved from
that colony to Va., and there mar. Sarah LaRue, a sister of John LaRue. These
two men came together to Ky. in 1784. In 1788 Hodgen
obtained from the Nelson Co. Court license to erect a mill on Nolynn, where
Hodgenville now stands, which was probably the first mill in this part of Ky.
He took an active interst in public affairs, serving as Sheriff, Presiding
Judge of county Court and as Rep. of Hardin Co. in the Genl.Assembly of Ky. At
the June term of the Hardin Co. Court, 1797, Robert Hodgens was granted license
to keep a tavern atnhis home on Nolynn. If we may judge from the
Bae-deker-like entry of the elder Michaux under date Jan. 31, 1796, it may
be inferred that Hodgen had an agreeable place of entertainment before this
tavern license was granted. This writer says (Vol. 3, Twaites' Early Western
Travens, page 88) - "Sunday the 31st passed by Huggins Mill on Nolin river
(good lodgins). "Robert Hodgen died in Feb. 1810.
Genl. John Thomas came to Nolynn in 1783, after serivice as a Cap. in the
Va. troops in the Rev. War. His wife was a dau. of Robert Hodgen.
-- there is quite a bit of info. re St. Clair's campaign against the Indians
which I will skip in interest of space --
