Subject: Ancestry of Ezekiel Dye (your E. Dye) back to the 1600's!! Hopefully,
the subject line caught your attention and got you a little excited. I found
your info on the Dye family on the Net and thought I'd try to help you out.
First, I don't know if you have received updated info on this family and have
not yet put it into your database, or for that matter, if I've ever contacted
you in the past (so many people...so much confusion), but here goes. The E. Dy
& Sarah Egbert (m. Abt 1807-Westmoreland Co, PA) listed on your web page are in
my line. E. Dye is in fact Ezekiel Dye, Sr. (b. 01 Jul 1751-Cranbury, Middlese
Co, NJ; d. 01 Jul 1830-Renrock, Noble Co, OH; bur. Dye Cemetery, Noble Co, OH).
He is my 6G-grandfather. I am descended from his 1st wife, Elizabeth Cox (b.
12Nov1751/57-Upper Freehold,MonmouthCo,NJ; m. 02Jan1799-NJ; d. Abt
1805-WestmorelandCo,PA), however. His parents were John Dey, Sr. and Mary
Applegate (don't have my info on them with me) Anyway, Ezekiel Dey (sometimes
listed this way) was a Rev. War soldier and fought in a Light Horse Brigade at
the Battle of Monmouth (NJ), if I recall. He is descended from a dutch family
that dates back to the 1600's in America.
At this time, I don't have all of my charts and info with me, so I'm
going by memory, not always a good thing with me. :-) Anyway, the quick of it
is that he is descended from Laurens "Big Shoe" Duytszen, who immigrated from
Holstein, Denmark to New Amsterdam (Harlem, NY specifically) in the late 1630's
or so. He was banished from the colony for selling his wife (it's a very long
and strange story), and died in Bergen,NJ (present day Jersey City).
Thorugh the years, the family's name was spelled/changed from Duytszen to Die
to Dey and eventually it was mainly spelled as Dye.
As for Sarah's family, all I know of it is of her. My info has her as
(b. 1772; d. 1844-Renrock, MorganCo,OH; bur. Old Renrock Cemetery,MorganCo,OH).
I knew she married a Paul, but that was about it. Hopefully, we'll be able to
fill in each other's blanks.
One other thing, I have been in contact quite frequently with Regina Berry
on the Dye family and has much more info than I on this entire group. Actually
I've obtained most of my info from her. As a matter of fact, I got an E-mail
from her today telling me that she was going to NY to look through the 14 very
large boxes prepared on the Dye family by a researcher from the early 1900's.
Wish I could join her!! If I recall, there I go again-going with my terrible
memory, Regina is descended from Morgan Dye, son of Ezekiel & Sarah Egbert. On
last quick thing on that front, I have 9 children listed from those two, the
youngest of whom is Furnam Dye (b. 18Feb1820-Renrock,MorganCo,OH; d.
27Jan1903-Renrock, NobleCo,OH; bur. Renrock M.P. Cemetery,Morgan Co,OH). Two
things that you may notice from that. First, Regina lists him as Furnam, not
Forman Dye as you have listed. Second, Renrock was originally in Morgan Co, bu
that was before Noble Co. was formed from it, hence the change.
My quick bio, in case you're interested: I was born on 01May1968 in Marietta,
OH. I grew up in Napier, OH (it's not on any regular map), which is near
Vincent (about 10-15 miles west of Marietta). I graduated from Penn State in
1991 and worked here until this past July. I'm taking graduate school classes
again, and my be moving to Pittsburgh by the end of the month. I have done
quite a bit of research in Washington Co, and have concentrated on that area in
particular. If you have any questions about the area, or any other families
that you need help with there, let me know. There's only one potential problem
though. I may be moving in a couple of weeks and may lose my E-mail acct. So,
if you want to insure that you get ahold of me and get me started on something
for you, you'll have to get back to me by E-mail by next Friday (16th), to
ensure that I'll get it. Otherwise, the best way to contact me is either throug
Regina, whom I will undoubtably keep up-to-date on my whereabouts, or else writ
to me at my parents home (see address at the end). I'll always be able to be
contacted there.
Two last things and I'll let you go. First, I hope to be visiting Westmoreland
County early next week to do some research on these families.
I grabbed your Paul info from the web and I'll keep an eye out for them also.
I'll definitely let you know if I find anything new on them.
Second, since you had some families in the Noble/Morgan/Washington Co.
areas, I thought I'd see what families you have done research on there. I only
got to give your database a quick scan, but I noticed you had Witham's &
Britton's (I didn't recognize any of them though) in your database also, but
didn't have much time to go through everything. Obviously, I'm interested in
the Britton's (my surname), but my G-grandmother was a Witham also.
That's all for now. I hope this was helpful to you. Definitely write
to Regina though, as she is super nice & likewise, very helpful!! I'll drop her
a line and let her know that you may contact her. She might even contact you
before that though, depending on how often you check your E-mail and get around
to letter writing. I understand how difficult that can be though, I think I'm
over 6 months behind on mine. As long winded as I can get sometimes, like I
have in this case, it's easy to see why. :-) Hope to talk to you later. Until
then, Good Luck & Happy Hunting!! Scott

Revolutionary War. He was living in NJ in 1778, but appears to be in PA by 1789
He came to Ohio from Pennsylvania, and in 1804 followed the old Federal Trail,
looking for lands to purchase. He settled on Meigs Creek, near Renrock. He sent
his sons in 1806, and joined them in 1807. Two daughters of Ezekial Dye Sr, cam
to this township with the family, but returned to the East after a few years.
(Only two of his sons were over 15 at this point - it is unlikely a 24 year-old
and an 18 year old would bring along a 5 and 8 year old to clear new land.)

in Pennsylvania on the little Sewicky River. In NJ, Ezekial had served in a
detail to bury the dead at the battle of Monmouth, dragging the corpses under
rail fences. He was in the Light Horse calvalry and his captains' name was
Nixon. The battle was fought on a very hot day in June and the soldiers
suffered from heat and thirst; and while on the march to Monmouth they stopped
in a grove to water. An old woman came out with sweet cakes in her apron and
offered Washington some, he thanked her but did not eat any because of fear of
treachery and poison. He enlisted Feb 1, 1777 and was discharged Apr 1, 1779.
(NOTE: records indicate the captains name was probably Dixon, not Nixon). The
patent conveying land to him in Ohio for his service (Sec. 32, 640 acres) was
signed by President James Madison in 1812.
