[815] BIRTH: IGI Batch #: 7620808, Sheet #: 38, Source Call #: 1058580

[816] !BIRTH-CONFLICT: There is some confusion as to what Arthur Jr's birth date is.
The DAR Records list it as 16 July 1752 whereas all other records list it as 31
Mar 1740. It is believed that the 1740 birth date is correct but there is
always the possibility that there are two Arthur's here that are being confused
His death in 1828 would have been at age 88 if he had been born in 1740. If h
had been born in 1752 he would have been three years younger than his wife whic
seems unlikely.

[817] !1770 LAND: Land transferred from Arthur (Sr.) to son, Arthur Jr. Baltimore

[826] !1822 RESIDENCE: In Dec. 1822 the family of son Arthur III relocated to
Bartholomew Co. In. Source: Sarah Edmonson Chenoweth Edwards' obituary, 1878.
Also Arthur's daughters Rachel and Margaret with their husbands Arthur Chenowet
and Benjamin Irwin moved to Bartholomew County IN at about the same time. It
may be assumed that the move consisted of the father, Arthur (3). and his wife
Elspa, and three of his children and their families. The children were Arthur
(4) and his wife Elizabeth Edmonson, Rachel(4) and her husband Abraham
Chenoweth, and Margaret(4) and her husband Benjamin Irwin. All three families
bought and sold land in Columbus, IN.

[827] !1829 DEATH-CHILDREN-WILL: Proved and files Feb 2, 1829, Recorded March 6th,

hundred and twenty eight. (signed) Arthur Chenoweth Signed

last will and testament in presence of us who have hereunto
subscribed our names as witnesses of the testate.

[828] !1829 DEATH: Arthur Chenoweth Jr. dies 1829, Columbus IN. [Source: DAR Records]
In the main lobby of the Bartholomew Count IN courthouse is a brass plaque
commemorating Arthur Chenoweth Jr for his Revolutionary War service.

[829] !PARENTS: There is a major debate as to the parents of "Arthur who married
Elspa Lawrence". Cora Hyatt identifies this Arthur as Arthur(3) Authur (2)
John (1). Jon Egge, in particular, believes that he is Arthur(3) John(2) John
(1). The following long text is extracted from seven e-mail messages I receive
from Jon Egge in 1999 where he documents various evidence to support his theory

[830] Leonard's wife, Mariah Irwin, I am sure, must have something to do with Benjami
Irwin. Mariah is 18 born IN. Are they (Leonard and Mariah) first cousins?
Benjamin is still in Bartholomew with a "new wife?", Martha age 46 with a home
between him and Havilah A. Chenoweth. Martha and Ben's kids start at age 11
which would imply that Margaret died before 1839. Margaret married Ben on
August 24, 1811. Mariah would be born 1832 which means she could be one of
Margaret's. Benjamin Irwin's will would be something to check. He had money:
R/E value in 1850 is $10,000.

[831] 4 houses away from the Shoemakers in Clinton Co are James Edwards and his wife
"Sally" Chenoweth, tying in with the Arthur relationship. Also in the county o
page 450 are Job Harryman and Eleanor Chenoweth (another daughter of Arthur).
This is how I found Newton = N.S. Harryman in 1860, as he was still in the same
township. Staying with Eleanor is an unknown Chenoweth, 'Eliza', age 9. I woul
assume the Eliza and Amelia are sisters and the parent has died and the kids
farmed out.

[832] Also in this same township in Clinton Co are 3 Richard(3) Chenoweths are pages
444, 447: THOMAS(4) and his sons JOHN(5) and JOSEPH C(5).

[833] This means the ARTHUR and RICHARD Chenoweth reunite in Indiana.

[834] IN FACT I suspect that Eliza and Amelia may be unknown children of James
Chenoweth, son of THOMAS(4), as Rachel Hill, the wife of James died in 1843 and
maybe James could not handle the "younger children"

[835] All that again brings me back to my premise that this Arthur is Richard's
brother not his 1st cousin from Maryland. I look at the names of his kids and
see a Rachel, Elizabeth and Mary all named for siblings of Richard and Arthur.
There is a Margaret named for Richard's wife. There is Eleanor named for his
brother's John's 2nd wife. There is a son Absolom named for their brother.
There are no 'old' Absoloms in Maryland. There is a John named for their fathe
John.

[836] Again, I look at Maryland and Arthur(3) Arthur(2) is doing land deals with his
father while supposedly he is married in Virginia. He comes "back" to Maryland
to fight along side his brother John, yet when John moved to VA, Arthur, his
close brother, leaves and moved to Jefferson, KY where there are only JOHN(2)
lines. We know that Arthur(3) John(2) is there, because he is acting in concert
with his sister Elizabeth Stewart. Yet we are lead to believe that one Arthur,
seamlessly, replaced the other and became immediately involved with Richard's
family.

[837] There is evidence of an Arthur still being in Berkeley Co., VA at the same time
John(3) ARTHUR(2) is there, by suretors at marriages that take place there. If
Arthur was so land rich in Maryland, why would he go abandon his close family
relatives, never associate with them again and go to the wilds of KY?

[838] One thing I suspect. Involved in all this was the Calvert deal. If I remember
dimly, this Arthur line had some sort of bible which was kept under lock and ke
by a descendant who was involved in promoting Cora's research. Part of the
impetus of this backing was the bogus lawsuit over the Calvert property. If yo
were trying to align yourself with the Calvart claim, would you rather be the
Arthur of John who was VA based or the Arthur of Arthur who was "INVOLVED" with
the Maryland properties and the lease.

[839] If you were to throw away the Hiatt book and look at this now, the Arthur who
married Elspa Lawrence would be Arthur(3) John(2)... So what are the proofs, or
is there only Cora

[840] I came away from Bowling Green still convinced that Arthur(3) in Kentucky is a
John(2) line. There is no proof that I came of ATHUR(2) other than Cora Hiatt.
Incidentally we got our first ABSOLOM(4)'s from ARTHUR(3) since we placed him
back in Kentucky and married him to Eleanor Duvaul. Absolom went to Lawrence
Co., IL. We have 3 children known.

[841] Descendants of Absolom Chenoweth

[842] Generation No. 1

[843] ABSOLOM4 CHENOWETH (ARTHUR3, ARTHUR2 NOT, JOHN1) was born April 17, 1774 in
Hampshire Co., VA (now WV). He married ELEANOR DUVALL February 19, 1795 in
Nelson Co., KY, daughter of JOHN DUVALL and ANNE TARLETON. She was born 1775 i
St. Mary's Co., MD.

Children of ABSOLOM CHENOWETH and ELEANOR DUVALL are:
i. MATILDA5 CHENOWETH, b. Aft. 1795; m. HENRY REINEYKING, September 21, 1822,
Lawrence Co., IL; b. Aft. 1785.
ii. ELIZABETH CHENOWETH, b. Aft. 1795, Jefferson Co., KY; d. February 1846; m.
SAMUEL ADAMS, December 23, 1823, Lawrence Co., IL; b. Aft. 1785; d. February 19
1846.
iii. JOHN MILES DUVALL CHENOWETH, b. September 01, 1814, Jefferson Co., KY; d.
January 11, 1870, Lawrence Co., IL; m. (1) ELIZABETH FAIL, August 29, 1835,
Illinois; b. Bet. 1809 - 1817; d. Abt. 1836, Illinois.; m. (2) MARY FAIL, May
19, 1844, illinois; b. February 07, 1829, Lawrence Co., IL; d. November 17,
1889, Lawrence Co., IL.

[844] =============================================================

[845] I am looking at the 1850 Census of Nelson Co. KY - district #1 page 274. As you
know that is where Arthur was before he went to IN. There is an Elizabeth
Chenoweth (Chineworth) there age 62 b: Virginia with a female Ruth Chenoweth,
age 22 born KY. I find no Elizabeth that fits other than Arthur's wife. I don't
think she was with Arthur in the 1850 in Indiana.
Could Elizabeth have been visiting? Could she have somehow returned to Kentucky
Maybe Peter knows who this lady is? Were the Edmonson's still in KY? As an asid
there is a 72 tear old Edmundson (Edmonton) "Sally" in Jefferson Co who is
staying with a George Guntevrian from NJ - his wife is VA...

[846] =============================================================

[847] I was looking at the VA census of Hamshire Co dated 1782. An Arthur with 7
people (this matches known 5 children to 1782 is living next door to John
Chenoweth, Sr. The list was submitted by Levi Ashbrook. Living very close is a
James Largent who I believe was born 1745 in Hampshire Co. m: Margret Stephens.
If Lawrence is really Largent this could be a brother to Elspa, that is a long
shot but still... The fact that this Arthur is next door to John, Sr. speaks to
Arthur(3) of KY being a John(2). Also nearby is James Stuart and a wife (the
newly married Elizabeth Chenoweth). Richard(3) has already left for KY. Does
Arthur and Elizabeth now leave. Arthur seems to be there by 1784 and Elizabeth
Stuart by 1786... I think the Largent name is worth looking into... I only had
one page of the Census, but did not see a Lawrence.

[848] ==========================================================

[849] GIVEN information
CASANDRA2 BOSLEY (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1752, and died September 02, 1793 in
Mercer Co., KY. She married ARTHUR CHENOWETH March 24, 1784 in Balitmore Co.,
MD. He was born Bet. 1745 - 1755, and died 1800.

Child of CASANDRA BOSLEY and ARTHUR CHENOWETH is:
i. ELIZABETH3 CHENOWETH, b. Aft. 1784.
====== ========= ========= ==========

[850] Let's say Arthur is born prior to 1755. Who is available. By the timing he MUS
be a 3rd generation Arthur. We have 4, only William(2) has no Arthur.
William is in Virginia.

[851] Arthur Chenoweth of Thomas(2), but he is NOT in Maryland, he marries 1st
Elizabeth Williams and has a daughter Elizabeth born about 1783. He goes to
Mason Co., KY and OH. His will defines his children.

[852] Arthur Chenoweth of Ricahrd(2). He lives in Baltimore and married Ann Beasman
by 1758. This Arthur is known by his will and never leaves Baltimore.

[853] Arthur Chenoweth of John(2). He is living in Virginia married with 5 children
in 1782 next to his father John(2). His wife is given in one place as
Margaeret. He is known to have gone within a short time to Jefferson Co.,
perhaps with the Stuarts. He is known to be there in 1786 accepting a bond for
the administration of Elizabeth Chenoweth Stuart's estate (his sister).

[854] Arthur Chenoweth, Jr of Arthur(2). If the Arthur of KY who married Elspa
Lawrence is Arthur of John (which he appears to be) then this is the ONLY Arthu
available. He is in Baltimore. Is traditionally thought to have gone to KY an
the Bosley family confirms this, but perhaps he is gone later than we thought.

[855] This arrangement saying that Margaret is Elspa and and that Arthur, Jr.
marries Cassandra appears to be the only logical explanation.

[871] =========================================================

[872] >From Greg Wulker: maybe sisters to Elspa? .... BTW - I am getting real curious
about the name Elspa. I have never seen another usage. I am begining to believe
it is a nickname of some derivation. There are records that Arthur of John(2)'s
wife name was Margaret. Is Margaret and Elspa connected? I don't know.....

[873] "Another thing I am working on is that Lawrence family! I have found three
Lawrences in Frederick Co.,Va. so far.
Jasper Cather b.1739-40 in Ulster , Ireland. d. at Gainsborough, Frederick
Co.,Va. in 1812. His first wife was Catherine Lawrence, and second wife was
Barbara Lawrence, probably sisters. Barbara he married about 1772, and thirdly
he married to Sarah Moore in 1786.
Willa Cather, the American novelist is descended from Jasper Cather, as she
was born on Back Creek. Her birthplace still stands near Gore,Va., in Western
Frederick Co.
The third Lawrence is found in a docket after one of our Chenoweth wills or
estates. I'll have to locate it. I was checking the will or estate the other
night when I sent you the info., and saw the name .....? Lawrence listed next.

[874] =====================================================

[875] Peter sent me sometime back a box of copies to source material for the many
names in his spreadsheets that we used to originally assemble the first part of
the database. In it was a copy of the Bible pages from Arthur(3) who married
Elspa Lawrence. There is an entry on a third page by Lewis Rose Chenoweth
stating the entries above were a copy of the family registers kept by his fathe
and his grandfather.

[876] There were two pages, one for each Arthur(3) and John(4). On these are listed
the birthdates of Athur(3) and his children and John(3) and his children. Those
for John(3) are all similar handwritten and appear to have been done at the sam
time. Those for Arthur(3) were done in a different handwriting and parts appear
to have been done a different times.

[877] These dates were used by Cora Hiatt in her book, when she states on page 84
"This record was taken from Bible owned by Arthur Jr.(3), then by his son John,
then his son Louis R.

[878] Curiously these dates agree with the histories except for Arthur(3). That date
is clearly July 16th 1752. But in Cora's book she gives the date March 31, 1740
I have puzzled over this for some time. I think this is more weight to the
argument that Arthur(3) of Kentucky who married Elspa Lawrence was not Arthur,
Jr.

[879] The dates of the children of John(2) are varied. Some are exact some are even
years. Arthur's is an even year. In Cora's book they were all even years. Exact
dates have been added for William(3) John(3) and Mary(3) Rachel(3) probably fro
sources of those lines individually. Harris has these in his book. The year of
birth for Richard(3) is given various dates in dates and Harris admits as much
stating that dates range from 1738 to 1745. Clearly there was no single Bible
source for John(2)'s children.
Moreover some of the dates may be guesswork.

[880] I have always felt it curious that the dates of John's children give him first
sons and then 3 daughters. It is a curious distribution.

[881] If the date of Arthur, Jr. is March 31, 1740, the clearly the Arthur who marrie
Elspa Lawrence is NOT Arthur, Jr., but rather John(2)'s son born July 16th 1752
Why else would this ONE date be changed and the other's accepted except to plac
him as Arthur, Jr. and "heir apparent" to the lands in Baltimore...... Moreover
if Arthur(3) was the youngest son it might make sense that he his living next
door to John in Levi's 1782 Census.

[882] Other sources I have seen that predate Cora's work surmise that Arthur of
Kentucky was the son of John. It was Cora's work that placed him differently.
Maybe you can think of so other logic, but I cannot.

[883] One other curiosity: I have always wondered about the name Elspa. The
handwriting make this 'p' to be more like a long 'f', which was used for double
'ss'. I think her name might have been Elossia... or Elossa....
