"Notes inherited from Grandmother, Mabel Smith Staub:
When the Ky. area first offered itself, he acquired claims to vast tracts
through the connection with the Boone family, notable Squire Boone.
These tracts total in the area of 40,000 acres. He is stated by A. C.
Quisenberry of the War Dept., Wash., D.C. to have been an officer in the
Rev. War...probably a Capt. in the Va. Militia.
In 1779, he went into Ky. and built a cabin about five or six miles south
of Boone's Station. He left his wife behind, he was accompanied by his
brother, Samuel, and their cabin was located on Brashear's Creek. Early
in 1781, he and Benjamin Lynn or Linn together with John Garrard went
out from Beargrass of the Falls (now Louisville) to establish a
settlement. It is probably that he came down to the Falls in the Ohio in
Ky. by flatboat in mid-Nov., 1784 bringing his wife and infant dau. with
him. His first son was born in the early Phillips Fort and was named
Quire in honor of the close association and gratitude going to the Boones.
It is one of the most popular male names amonst the LaRue desc. to this
day.
He was a Presbyterian in Va., but became an elder of the Severns Valley
or elizabethtown Baptist Church on 12/5/1788. At his death in the year
1792 on Jan. 4, his property was appraised by Patrick Brown - Joe
Kirkkpatrick - and Conrad Walters. He died above Hodgenville, Ky. and is
buried in the pioneer graveyard on the hill on the A. B. Twyman farm, on
fourth mile East of the road leading North from Hodgenville. He had only
been married nine years, having wed in 1783.
He was one of ten ch.: Jacob, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Rebecca, Samuel,
James, and Jabez.
