Notes given to me by my grandmother, Mabel Smith Staub:
"Abraham LaRue was born in Holland, but said to have been from
Mannheim in the Pals or the Palatinate. He arrived on this continent in
1680. His property referred to as that of Laroe in Ulster co., N.Y.:
21-13-1688. He took the oath of allegiance to the King of England at
Kingston in Ulster co., N.Y. on 9/1/1689: this probably denoted a prior
allegiance to the dutch colonial government. In 1694, he was elected
constable of the freeholders (Staten Island). It was on Staten Island at
his location there that he made his will in 1702. On 1/4/1706, he was
electec onstable of the Northern Division of staten Island...known as a
yeoman of Staten Island. Thought to have gone to Hopewell Twp. in N. J.
before his death although the probate refers to him as of staten Island
(goes on to quote from Don Watson) ...our Le Roux-LaRue-Larew family
traveled from Pas-de-Calais and Du Nord (Modern maps) and the ancient
province of Lalloeu in France to Mannheim, in search of religious
freedom. They endured the privations of arriving with nothing, and the
bitter winters of 1654 and 1658, along with the super-floods of the
Thein river which followed...(Many pages of general info. from Dr. Watson
are in the possession of Mrs. kathryn Tingay of Fresno, Ca. and can be
read or photocopied.)..."
