Maurice Ross Paul was born March 1, 1900 the oldest child of Daniel Paul and
Ruth Wheeler Ross. Maurice was born in Monon, White County Indiana, while his
parents were living on the Paul family farm. Shortly thereafter, the family
moved to Pence Illinois near the Ross relatives where Daniel armed. Maurice
had two younger siblings, Pauline and Nelson.

In 1907, Ruth Ross died. Aunt Edna Paul (age about 23) came to live with the
family for some time to care for the children. In June of 1908 Daniel Paul
married Francis Moschell who bore him two additional children, Chester Orville
and Margaret Agusta. After the death of Daniel Paul in 1911 from typhoid from
drinking stream water, the orphaned children was separated and Maurice went to
live with his brother's older sister, Harriet (Aunt Hattie) and her husband
Charles Cowger. Hattie had bought the "Paul farm" after the death of her
father, Judson in 1906. Paulene went to liv with her sister's brother Hayse
Ross and Nelson lived with other Ross relatives in Oklahoma

In June of 1914, Charles Cowger died, a suicide by hanging. Young Maurice is
said to have found the body of his uncle hanging in the barn. Hattie sold the
farm and she and Maurice moved to Monticello where the boy attended high
school. In 1918 he entered Purdue University and studied Electrical
Engineering. Hattie sold the house in Monticello and moved to Lafayette to
keep house for Maurice. The Lafayette house was described as "a shack" by my
grandmother LaVergne Paul. At this time, Hattie decided that it was time to
reunite the family, so for awhile Pauline and Nelson also lived with Hattie
and Maurice. Apparently the strain of caring for three active teenagers was
too much for Hattie whose health failed her. She suffered from heart problems
the remainder of her long life.

Maurice did not graduate from Purdue, apparently due to persistent problems
with mathematics. In 1923 he left for California and lived in Oakland. For
many years he worked for AT&T as a lineman and repairman. For the last 20
years of his career with AT&T he was an engineer in the San Francisco office.
AT the time of his retirement, he was known as "Mr. San Francisco".

On March 19, 1927 he married Natalie Julliana Opdyke in Sacramento. They had
two children:

After he retired, Maurice and Natalie sold their Oakland home and bought a
mobile home in Bethel Island California, in the Sacramento River delta region.
The also bought a 10 foot cab-over camper in which they toured most of United
states, Canada, Alaska, and Central America. They visited relatives and
collectied family information (mostly Opdyke). Natalie had a religious vision
and subsequently joined the Mormons.

According to relatives, they were quite a pair: he tall and taciturn; she an
extremely larve woman and very loquacious. His grandchildren remember Maurice
as very formal and always impeccably dressed. He insisted, for example, on
rigid table manners even though it was often hard for small children to live
up to his standards. Natalie was a warm and loving grandmother. She was also
known for stretching the truth on occasion.

Maurice died in Bethel Island on October 29, 1973 of a cerebral hemorrage.
Natalie died on November 12, 19982 after being hit by a truck while changing a
tire by the side of the road.
