1838, 6th of 7 children of Jacob Paul and Elizabeth Harding Paul. Born in
Renock, Morgan County Ohio (later Noble County).

Lieut. Judson S. Paul was born in Muskingum County, Ohio September 1 1838, and
is the sixth of the seven children born to Jacob and Elizabeth (Harding) Paul
natives of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and respectively of Welsh and English
descent. At the age of five, in 1807, Jacob Paul was taken to Morgan County,
Ohio by his parents and was there reared, educated, and married, and for many
years followed farming. Subsequently, he came to White County, and purchased
property in the village of Bradford or Monon, where Mrs. Elizabeth Paul died,
a member of the Baptist Church, and since then Mr. Paul has lived with his
children, at present making his home with Judson S. The latter received a
good education in the common and high schools of his native state and worked
with his father on the farm until 1861, when he entered Miller's Academy, in
Guernsey County, Ohio, and interrupted his studies there in August 1862 by
enlisting in Company C, One Hundred Twenty Second, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
At the organization of this company he was elected Second Lieutenant, and he
was with his regiment in all its engagements until July 15, 1863, when he was
taken prisoner at Winchester Virginia and sent to Libby Prison; thence to
Macon Ga; thence to Charleston (where for a time the prisoners were placed
under the fire of the Federal fleet, and then to Camp Sorghum, near Columbia S.
C. from which prison, Mr. Paul and others made their escape November 15, 1864
and by Nocturnal and secret travel made their way to a point about 200 miles
north in Cherokee County, where they were re-captured by Thomas's legions of
Indians, taken to Greenville, S.C. and placed in Jail, from which they were
released by the jailer's daughter, only to be re-captured three days later.
In March of 1865, Mr. Paul was sent to Richmond, was paroled April 2, and
discharged May 15, 1865. In the fall, he came to Union Township and engaged
there with his brother in farming and stock raising until the fall of 1868,
when he bought the farm in this township on which he now lives. Dec 4, 1868
he married Anna McCuaig, a native of Washington County, Ohio, who has borne
him five children - Harriet, William J, Daniel, James, and Joseph E. Lieut.
Paul is a member of the G.A.R. and in politics is a staunch Republican.

is hereby granted to Second lieutenant, J. S. Paul. 122d Ohio Volunteers , a
paroled prisoner of war at the expiration of which he will report in person
to the Commanding officer of Camp Parole nearest to the Department of Army in
which his regiment is serving.

[74] May 20th, 1865, War Department, Adjutants Office, Under the provisions of
General Order, No. 82, may 6th. 1865, the following officers are hereby
mustered out and honorably discharged from the service of the United States,
to take effect May 5th, 1865 on account of their services no longer required.
They will receive no final payment until they have satisfied the Pay
Department that they are not indebted to the Government: J.S. Paul. 122nd
Ohio Volunteers.

[75] October 9, 1891. Invalid Pension. Disabled by digestive organs and right
testicle. Suffers from indigestion and constipation of bowels. Health is bad.

Has pain in right testicle which swells at times. Pulse rate: 78, Height 6
ft, weight 162 pounds, age 53 years. Considered 3/4 disabled.

[76] May 23, 1992. General Affidavit. That I contracted disease of the stomach
(indigestion) about 1880 and enlargement of the right testicle about 1875
which has been growing ever since.

[77] December 10, 1892. Issued a pension of $6.00 per month

[78] Sept 12, 1903. Surgeon's Certificate. Age 65, 5 feet 11 inches, 135 pounds,
eyes grey, hair dark, pulse rate 90-100-110. Body not well nourished.
Disease of digestive organs. Disease of right testicle. The right testicle

Soldicr Leutenant J. S. Paul
J. S. Paul, a First Lieutenant of Co. C. 122nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry
enlisted with Robert McCoy on August 22, 1862 under Capt. G. I. Henderson and
Lieutenant William Glenn. He was captured at Winchester, Virginia. June 15,
1863 by General Early. J. S. Paul served 22 months in prison, the bigger half
at Andersonville. He came back home and emigrated to Monon, Indiana. and died
there. Besides Robert McCoy among those who enlisted with I. S. Paul were
Sergeant A. W. Bell, Ebb Bell, I. N. Carr, Ellis Carr, A. B. Sears, and Ebb
Robinson.
The 122 Regiment being part of General Milroy's command was located at
Winchester during the winter of 1862. Lieutenant Paul participated in the
battle at Winchester, June 13, 14, 15, 1863.

1867, Filed and Recorded 7 Dec 1867. Copy in my possession. On December 4,
1867 Anna McCuaig, age 20, married Judson S. Paul, a former officer in the
Union Army, and local farmer. Judson had earlier that year bought a farm
straddling the border between Monon and Honey Creek Townships in White
County, Indiana.

[89] !1906 DEATH: Dec 11, 1906, Monon, White County, IN, Monticello Herald,
Thursday Dec 13, 1906:
Judson Paul died suddenly Tuesday from a stroke of paralysis at his home a few
miles northwest of here. His funeral will take place today (Thursday). The
cortege will leave the house at noon and will proceed to Bedford, where
services will be held in the Bedford cemetery. Mr. Paul had a wide circle of
relatives and friends to whom his sudden death is a great shock. He leaves a
family of four sons and two daughters.

[90] !1906 DEATH: Dec 11, 1906, White County Democrat, Dec 14, 1906. Judson Paul
dies of paralysis. Judson Paul, an old and highly esteemed citizen of Monon
township died Tuesday from a stroke of paralysis. He had been about his work
as usual Tuesday and at six o'clock was talking with someone over the
telephone when his voice failed him. He died about four hours later. The
funeral was held at Bedford Church Thursday afternoon, Rev. H.G. Rice
conducting services. Internment in the Bedford Cemetery.
