We visited the graveyard in 1992. We did not find any Alexander

there, according to a cemetery book pub. by Coles co. Gen. Soc. There is
mention of a cholora epidemic in the 1830s, resulting in many burials in
this graveyard. . . many of the graves in the center of the area are
unmarked."

!The Darsts of Virvinia, H. Jackson Darst, Williamsburg, Va. 1972 -
"Huguenot who fled La Rochelle France, about 1627 . . . settled in Holland.
there he mar. and two sons and a daughter were born . . . About 1680,
LaRoux embarked with his famaily for America. He died during the
journey and was either bur. at sea, or shortly after he arr. in the
Huguenot settlement on the Hudson in New York."
!Letter from Dr. Dan Watson to Jane Dunn, 203 Redwood Dr., New Albany,
In. 47150: "Our encounter with the LaRue family begins in 11th Century
France, with William the Conqueror, who was known then as William the
Red, which is William Le Roux in French...The Le Roux family of
Normandy, Franch, were known as 'The Lords of Ousille-La-Riviere', and,
of course, they were also known as 'Normans'. While the names LaRue, Le
Roux, and Le Roy, have entirely different meanings, it can be
demonstrated that LaRue and Le Roux were frequently interchanged, and
that Le Roy was frequently associated with both. LaRue means 'The Way
of the Nobles', Thus, it defined a street, road, or route, associated with
the nobility. Le Roux means 'The Red', and was the name of William the
Conqueror, certainly a noble. Le Roy means, 'The King'.
Our connection to William Le Roux appears to be by way of Pierre De La
Rue, who was born about 14560 in Picardy, France (in the ancient
province of Le Leu), or in nearby Tournai, Belgium. He died in Kortrijk,
Belgium, on Novermber 20, 1518, having served as court musician, and
was a composer of music greatly admired by non-Catholic Christians,
and later by German Lutherans. His father (Pierchon De la Rue), was
chapel musician in the service of Philip I, King of Spain, who had,
previous to his royal calling, been known as Philip, Duke of Burgundy.
Charles V was, of course, the son of Philip, and Philip' sister, Margaret
of Austria, collected the musical works of Pierre De la Rue and his
father, an intersting fact since Charles the V was a persecutor of
non-Catholic christians. We jump a few years to Anthoine Le Roux, who
was born in Tournai, Belgium, 'in the low country, in the Province of Le
Leu', in about 1610. Abraham Le Roux, son of Anthoine Le Roux and ?
(unknown), was born about 1637, also in Tournai, Belgium, and fled from
there with his father in 1648, at the end of the thirty years war
(1618-1648) in Germany, to the German city of Mannheim. The French
Crusade against the non-Catholic (Huguenot) population of France,
combined with the Spanish Inquisition descending from the Netherlands,
ceded to Spain after the thirty years war, was sufficient reason for
Anthoine Le Roux to flee, and the Mayor of Mannheim, whose city had been
utterly destroyed by the war, offered the Huguenots the opportunity to
rebuild his city, in exchange for permission to leave (should they want
to), after twenty years of service, without paying a heavy exit tax, so
common in those days, and calculated on the anticipated earnings of the
individual and all family memers, if they had remained (a horrible,
gruesome tax)...ownership of the homes they built...freedom of worship
and education...ownership of the businesses they established...and
exemption from military service."
Newsletter from Dr. Watson dated 5 June, 1981: "I am in receipt of
information obtained from a conversation held by my great-grandfather,
Dr. Jesse Lafayette LaRue, and a Catholic Priest named LaRue (recently
arrived from France), in Fort Smith, Ark., in Dec., 1892. The document,
sent to meby Betty McCann, of Toddville, Iowa, near the Aaron LaRue
homestead there, relates the folllowing information (with my own
parenthetical comments):
The First La Rue was the Marquis De la Rue of Orleans, France. His
daughter (name unknown) had an affair with Francis the First, King of
France (1515-1547), apparently before he became King. Their
illegitimate child was 'Henry', who later became a Count and was
appointed to the position of 'overseer' of the royal roads and highways
(most appropriate, since 'de la Rue' means 'of the streets of the
nobility'). Henry was quite wealthy and had numerous estates, among
them the estate in the Province of Leurre (could this be our La Lue?), and
in the city of Orleans.
On the night of the Massacre of St. Bartholomew (1572), Felix de la Rue,
son of Henry, was murdered for refusing to renounce his non-Catholic
beliefs. His son, Justin, a small child, escaped (with persons unknonw) to
Heidelberg (West Germany), where he grew up and married a French lady,
(from this point the Priest is in error...read carefully).
Justin and wife had three sons: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, they fled
Germany to the New World (Staten Island). Abraham died without heirs.
Isaac had a daughter named Elizabeth, who married her first cousin,
Peter, who was the son of Jacob, (it is obvious that the Priest has
completely by-passed Abraham the Immigrant and his son, Peter. His
story becomes correct again, hwoever, with the Isaac-Elizabeth and
Jacob-Peter information). Title to the De la Rue estates in France passed
to Louis de la Rue, a younger brother of Felix, who chose (?) to embrace
Catholicism. All of the family papers were still in the Chateau de la Rue,
in Orleans (1892). Abraham (the one who died without heirs), tried
unsuccessfully on many occasions, to reestablish the 'New world La Rue
family' as the rightful heirs to the estates. The Priest described a family
coat of arms as 'a golden arch on a field of blue and white.' "
