(daughter Elizabeth): " 'Kitty' Matchette Vaughn: Newspaper Editor for
Adolph Sheby Ochs, founder of New York Times. He wanted to send her to
Palestine for the N. Y. Times, she entertained the President of Palestine.
This was before 1948 when Israel was returned as a State. . . she had so
many talents . . . once ran a Japanese Tea Room . . . founded the Art Dept.
of Cadek Conservatory in Chattanooga. She was also a founder of Authors
& Artists Club, now in its 50th year. She founded The Chattanooga
Writers Club . . founder of the Chattanooga Music Club, having published
music in Cincinnatti. . . graduate of the Cincinnatti Consrvatory of Music.
She spen 7 years . . . at the Cincinnati Art Institute . . designed orignal
pottery for the famous Rookwood Pottery . . . In 1956 I visited Rookwood
Pottery to see if I could purchase some of Mother's pottery -- 'We don't
have any of Kitty Matchette's pottery' they said ' It is in Museums all
over the world by now'. The pottery was always signed by the artist, no
two designs were alike. Mother painted at least a hundred portraits all
over the country by now, also her four historical paintings are still in
Greenville, Oh. in the Garet Museum of Fine Arts. . . Mother had an Art
Sutdio in Detroit for two years during the worst of the depression, but
she was so busy she didn't have the strength to fill allthe orders for
people to come and pose for her . . . Mother's full length portrait of her
father, Dr. William H. Matchette, won First Prize in the Three States Art
Exhibit. . . I held an art exhibit of Mother's and father's art work in
Chattanooga at the request of Edward & Le Bron's Jewelry Store . . the
Art Teacher at the Univ. of Chattanooga brought his entire class down to
see the exhibit. Father had a stroke and his hands were paralyzed for a
while, so Mother taught him 'Art' in order to try and strengthen his hands
. . . so art became therapy and relaxation."
