"There is some confusion over the name of this Crawford ancestor...in all
cases the wife's name is given as Onora or Honora (Grimes), so we can
assume that the male Crawford is one and the same. Collating the
sources, we find that John or William Crawford was Scotch-Irish in
origin, and was probably a native of Orange Co. (now Berkely Co.) in the
Shenandoah Valley, Va. He mar. Honora Grimes, also Scotch-Irish and a
native of Orange co., Va. If the dates we have preserved are correct, the
couple married later in life (perhaps second marriages). They had two
sons...father, John or William, died in 1736. When son William was born,
his mother would have been 49 and his father 54. (This defenitely needs
verification and rechecking, as Honora would have been 51 when son
Valentine was born only two years after William. I can consider one
child born late in life as possible, but two in quick succession (and no
earlier children known) as definitely unlikely.
After the death of Mr. Crawford, Honora apparently remarried Richard
Stevenson, by whom she had six children.....a bit too old to have seven
more children! Since she lived a full life, dying in 1776, she probably
stopped bearing children by age 42-44. Assuming 2 years per child, and I
skip for widowhood, that totals 17 years, which would make her married
the first time about 25 and put her most probably birth dates at between
1695 and 1700. If her first husband was indeed born c. 1678-80, then we
ought to look for a first wife for him.
