! National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Dec. 1975, Vol. 61, No. 4:
"Earliest Pfautz/Fouts Families in America" By John Scott Davenport.
P. 256: " . . . in Logan Co., Ky., 1796; in Wilkes Co., N. C., 1799, not in
Census of 1800, in Ashe Co., N. C., 1802; was the senior Fouts in Ashe Co.
after DEwald (brother) moved to Oh . . . left Ashe Co. in 1835, in Davidson
Co., N. C., 1840, gone thereafter. "
! John Scott Davenport, Ph.D., Sep. 16,1976: " . . .I have had considerable
correspondence with a large, active association of Fouts-Ray
descendants, of Tex. and Ala. Joseph Ray mar. Mary Fouts, dau. of Leonard
Fouts, in Madison Co., Ky., in 1794. Leonard gave the couple the land that
he had entered in Muhlenberg Co., Ky., and returned to Ashe Co., N.C.
Family lore states that Mary had a brother, George, who was killed by the
Indians in Tenn.
"I have documentation of the existence of both a Leonard Fouts and a
George Fouts in Wilkes-Ashe Co., N.C., in 1798. The evidence now points
strongly to the fact that John Fouts, son of Dewald, St., of Randolph Co.,
N.C., and Leonard Fouts, supra., who lived in Ashe Co., N.C., until 1835,
WERE ONE AND THE SAME PERSON. Leonard Fouts took title to the land
that 'Andrew Baker gave John Fouts.' By age, based on Mary's
marriage--even if she were age fourteen--John Fouts, of Dewald, and
Leonard Fouts were the same age.
"As if the John and Leonard confusion in N.C. is not bad enough, there are
two possible cases of John and Leonard confusion among the Pfoutz
Valley Pfoutz, per 1783, tax records. Two Leonard and two Johns are
taxed separately. . . "
