! John Scott Davenport, Ph.D. 15 Feb., 1972: Recopied from a rough
transcript dated '1927 (The correct date should be 1907, per Census
data) Source not stated but obviously NEW WASHINGTON NEWS, New
Washington, Clark Co., Ind.:
COL. T. D. Fouts' Obit.: "Word has been recd. here by William and J.L.
Adams of the death of their brother-in-law, Thomas Dugan Fouts, a
native of this county who passed away at his home in Wichita, Kans, in
the 82nd yr. of his life. . .
" Col. Fouts . . . a pioneer of this State . . .
". . . member of the Ind. Legislature representing this County . . . Civil
War, he organized the 137th Volunteer Inf. and was appointed Colonel. . .
mustered out in 1864. In 1869, he moved to Kans., and in 1874 located at
Witchita (sic) . . .
"Hotel business . . . G.A.R.
"In the year 1756, families emigrated from Pfouts Valley to N> C> and
settled in Randolph Co. Among them were the family of my grandfather,
Andrew Fouts, then a boy of 12 or 15 yrs. old.
"About the year 1765 or 1766, Andrew Pfouts mar. Elizabeth Garren. to
them were born 6 ch. The third, son, Louis, was my father. He was born
Apr. 10, 1778. . .
"On Jan. 22, 1801, father was mar. to Sarah Dougan, dau. of Col. Thomas
Dougan, an officer in the Rev. of 1776. In 1808, he emigrated to Indiana
Terr. He crossed the Ohio River at Westport, Ky., went four miles to
Jesse Henley;s, his brother-in-law . . ."
JSD: . . . Andrew's age would be right per above for the documented date.
A portion of the family Bible of Andrew and Elizabeth Fouts, of Uwharrie
(Contributed by Mrs. Caroline H. Crabtree, P. O. Box 575, St. James City,
Fl., 33956 -- Bible pages: A portion of the family Bible of Andrew and
Elizabeth Fouts, of Uwharrie: "The Bible apparently came down through
the line of Isabel Fouts, dau. of Lewis Fouts . .Both the text of the Bible
and the family inscriptions are in German. I translate the inscriptions . .
"On the right hand page (or where it should be) . . . only '750' can be
deciphered. Sure, '1750' and the date of birth of one of the parents.
Because of the position down the page, most likely the Mother, Elizabeth.
Andrew Fouts, the father, was the son of MICHAEL FOUTS, SR., and is said
to have died in 1780, his son Andrew being born posthumously. The
Fouts Bible (one-time in the Middletown, Oh., now reported to be in Mich.)
gives the birth of Andrew as March 1751. . . Michael Fouts, Sr., recd. his
land on the Uwharrie on Feb. 17, 1763, which correlates with Co.. Fouts;
statement that his gradfather was '12 or 15' years old . . . Whether there
were early ch. in the family who did not survive is conjecture, but it is
likely if Andrew and Elizabeth were mar. ca 1765-66 Their first son,
per German custom, should have been a 'Michael'.
