! John Scott Davenport, Ph.D., May 1, 1970: "The phoniest part of all this
researach is its presumable 'Quaker' base, which, I think all of you will now
agree, never existed in fact. We have a Hoover-Fouts desc. become President
of the United States and the baloney began to pile up. Andrew Hoover, Sr.,
was never a Quaker. Less than half of his family, immediate children, were
Quakers, half or total. Only one Fouts male of the primary lines was ever a
Quaker, and only two of his daughters followed him in that Faith, yet Brien
includes the Fouts as a Friends Family.
! National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Dec. 1975, Vol. 61, No. 4:
"Earliest Pfautz/Fouts Families in America" By John Scott Davenport. P.
249: p. 11 "(Andrew Hoover) . . . The Hoovers, surname immigrant ancestors of
President Hoover, lived on Little Pipe Creek waters.
Frederick (now Carroll) Co., Md., 1745-1762; moved to Uwharrie waters in Rowan
(now Randolph) Co., N.C. by 1763 . . . Ch. 13, 8 sons. Family was mixture of
Baptists, Dunkers, Quakers, and Methodists." ! John Scott Davenport, Ph.D., 14
June, 1972: Corroborating Andrew of being of Michael, in the Randolph Co., N.
C. Tax Lists of 1779, Andrew Fouts, jacob Fouts, John Mast, FRederick Waymire,
and Andrew Hoover (Jr.) are shown on the List of William Cole as refusing to
Take the Oath of Allegiance or to give an Inventory of taxables. They al
lived on the southern edng of the Uwharrie Dutch community on waters of
Jackson Creek and Cider Run and on the South Side of the Trading Road. In the
Census of 1790, correlated with land records, they are all still there except
that Elizabeth and her brood shows in the place of Andrew. The Jacob Fouts
adjacent to Andrew-Elizabeth is clearly identifiable as the third son of
Michael who married Eleanor Malinda Waymire." ! John Scott Davenport, Ph.D.,
June 14, 1971: The pull of Michael Fouts, Sr.'s family was to Montgomery Co.,
Oh. Although he had joined the Quakers, Jacob, of Michael, went to Montgomery
Co. with his father's group and originally settled among the Dunkers. I know
him quite well, for there were at least four of the ch. of Augustine
Davenport, of Rowan Co., N. C. ( two miles away) who went with Jacob, of
Michael, intermarried with the Fouts. (It might be noted that Andrew 'of
Richmond' Hoover, also a Quaker, settled among the Dunkers originally, but he
left with a short while.)

"Information on John Fouts, Jr., supplied by Dr. Edgar A. Menk, Rte.7, Muncie,
Ind.: The ancestry of John Fouts, Jr., is doubtful. It is my opinion that he
is the son of John Fouts, Sr., and the grandson of John Michael and Catherine
(_______) mentioned by Col. C. I. Dephart, genealogist, in an article on page
56 in the National Genealogical society Quarterly for dec., 1929, where he
says 'In my Hoover article, I say that about 1745 Andreas Hoover mar. Margaret
Catherine Fouts, only dau. of John Michael and Catherine (________) Fouts, who
arrived in Philadelphia on the ship 'William and Sarah' on 18 Sep., 1727 and
settled in Warwick twp., which adjoins West Earl Twp. on the West, Lancaster

Michael and John, then promptly moved to what is now carroll Co., Md., on Big
Pipe Creek, the Frederick Co., Md. where they acquired Farmsteads prior to
1750.

the rest of his life. John Fouts, Jr. at the same time moved to Rowan Co., N.

Charles A. McLean, Rancho del Oro, Davenport, Ca., 95017, pg. 25: "(32)
Andrew Hoover - 28 - (Chart #) . . . Emigrated to America, arriving
Philadelphia 9-9-1738 on the 'Two Sisters' . . . Settled in Lancaster Co.,
Penn., among relatives and friends who had preceeded him, including brothers
Johannes and Christian. In 1746 . . . moved to Carrol Co., Md., and in 1750
acquired title to farm at Mirey Springs on Big Pipe Creek near Uniontown where
most of their ch.
were born. Moved to N. C., probably in 1774 In 1779 took up land on Uwharrie
River where he built a grist mill at the fork, and this was an important
granary of the revolution. The family also gave $500 to the Revolutionary
cause -- a large sum of money in those days. This is no record of these
Hoovers as soldiers in the Revolution. In 1794 Andrew made a will, appoitning
wife and son Jonas as executors. Shortly afterwards he died and was buried
near Back Creek on the Uwharrie. His widow died three years later, in 1797.
