July 29 - August 4
| This web page has been set up to coordinate
the adventurous band of Mooney pilots who intend to
caravan to the Oshkosh 1998 fly-in. After the trip, I
will post pictures and stories here for the enjoyment of
those unable to make the pilgrimage. The caravan will originate at Paine Field (KPAE), WA, however, there will be additional rendezvous points along the route to enable Mooney pilots from other places to join the caravan. Our intent is to have a final rendezvous point close to Oshkosh from where we would like to have a formation flight into Oshkosh, perhaps with a group fly-by. If you wish, we could do the entire flight in a single day, but everyone would be very tired at the end. I am open to suggestion here. While I could do the trip with a single fuel stop between PAE and OSH in my 252, I attempted to allow for Mooneys with shorter range requiring more stops. The tentative flight plan that I propose below allows for a one night stay with additional stops in between to allow for others to join the caravan in progress. In picking this flight plan, I tried to avoid higher terrain, restricted areas and Bravo airspace. I also chose airports with more services and near larger towns to provide some choice of food and accommodation. Also, check out the links at the bottom
of this page for more stuff about what to expect at
Oshkosh and helpful planning information.

FLIGHT PLANThe current proposal is for us to depart from KPAE at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 26 arriving at our overnight stop that evening with the legs described below. It is expected that Mooneys from other parts will converge at KMSN in the afternoon of Monday, July 27. From there we hope to have a loose formation flight into Oshkosh en masse, culminating in a fly-by, if we can obtain permission. At Oshkosh, we hope to have reserved group parking for all the Mooneys. Most of us will camp at Oshkosh, while others have alternate accommodation arrangements. |
| * Times computed using MentorPlus for optimal altitudes for the 252 at 29" MP and 2300 RPM, and below 12,500' for the M20F with 2400 RPM and maximum MP with Ram Air in no-wind conditions and standard temperature and pressure. Times include climb, cruise, and descent to landing at the intermediate waypoints at maximum gross weight. Given the easterly direction of flight, etc., you can expect to do better. The leg between KMSN at KOSH is computed at 3500' MSL for all aircraft. |
Oshkosh Arrival ProceduresJonathan Paul Jonathan paul has put together a very comprehensive set of procedures for arrival into Oshkosh. It is imperative that all pilots on the caravan familiarize themselves with these procedures. The procedures are stored on Jonathan Paul's machine so that he can modify them in realtime as they change.Click here to read the procedures |
Camping at OshkoshJonathan Paul Jonathan paul has put together some advice on what to bring and what to do if you are planning on camping on the field as many of us are. These are stored on Jonathan's machine. You can view these by clicking below.Click
